Child Development Practitioner

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, Mohawk College (Fennell Campus), have partnered with local school boards to offer this opportunity for students who want to pursue a career as a Child Development Practitioner.

This program combines instruction in high school and at Mohawk College and provides a Cooperative Education placement working with children. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year with a minimum of 24 credits.

Career as a Child Development Practitioner

As a Child Development Practitioner, you love to work with people, in particular, young children. You enjoy the challenge of teaching children from a variety of different learning backgrounds. Your focus of attention will be in teaching children between the ages of 3-6 years of age in a wide scope of settings.

In this program, students complete three (4) credits towards a Child Development Practitioner Certificate of Apprenticeship by attending classes at Mohawk College every Tuesday and Thursday. Upon graduation, students are encouraged to continue their apprenticeship training at Mohawk College.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age and in your graduating year
  • Be in your final semester of Grade 12 with a minimum of 24 credits
  • Have an interest in working with young children
  • Be in good academic standing, including completion of all compulsory courses
    required for your Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Be willing to attend Mohawk College and a Cooperative Education placement
    in Semester 2

A limited number of spaces are available.

Program components include:

  • Pre-employment orientation and integration sessions at the home school
  • A Cooperative Education placement in an early childhood setting
  • Two days per week at Mohawk College to continue their apprenticeship
    in-school training

Program Credits/Certification:

  • Earn 4 high school credits towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Earn college credits toward a Child Development Practitioner Certificate of Apprenticeship
 

Delivery Schedule for Accelerated Child Development Practitioner Program

Highlights:

  • Block 1 students would take classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the first 7 weeks and then Tuesdays and Thursdays plus an additional 3rd day for the last 7 weeks. This will allow students to pick up the additional course (PLE 1 & placement) from Block 1.

  • Block 2 students would take classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the first 7 weeks and then just Thursdays for the last 7 weeks to complete their last course.

  • Students will complete Level 1 from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development CDP Apprenticeship curriculum; therefore all of the options/pathways will be available.
