Automotive Technician

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, The Ministry of Labour and Skills Development, Mohawk College (Fennell Campus), and other local school boards have joined forces to offer this opportunity for students who want to pursue careers as Automotive Service Technicians.
This program combines instruction at their home schools and Mohawk College and provides a Cooperative Education placement in the automotive repair and maintenance industry. This is a 2-year program. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in Grade 11 and Grade 12. Students in Grade 12 must be in their graduating year with a minimum of 24 credits.
Career as an Automotive Service Technician
An Automotive Service Technician inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and services mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and components of cars.
In this program, students complete the “Level One” portion of the in-school apprenticeship training for Automotive Service Technician at Mohawk College. The education and training opportunities are provided at home schools and at Mohawk College (Fennell Campus) where students will attend for 8 weeks of Level One Apprenticeship training. The remainder of the semester the student will participate and learn automotive service at their co-op workplace (sponsor).
Students will receive Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship training in a modern facility at Mohawk College.
To qualify, you must:
- Be at least 17 years of age and in your graduating year
- Have at least 24 credits
- Have an interest in transportation technology
- Be in good academic standing
- Demonstrate strong work habits and a positive attitude
- Students must be registered apprentices before attending the AST accelerated program
- Have completed courses in physics and grade 12 math
A selection committee that includes industry partners may interview candidates.
A limited number of spaces are available.
Program components include:
- Grade 12 students attend their home school for semester one for 4 classes
- Students will participate in cooperative education workplace, and learn for 8 weeks at Mohawk College completing the Level One Apprenticeship in-school training.
- Students will receive Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship training in a modern facility at Mohawk College.
Program Credits/Certification:
Upon successfully completing the program, you will:
- A Guidance Counsellor or Cooperative Education teacher must help you to complete an application form for the Accelerated Program and submit all required documents.
- Receive four co-op credits in the work place and graduate from your home schoolSuccessfully complete the “Level One” Apprenticeship training for Automotive Service Technician with valuable work experience and extensive skills training
